A lot has been said of the incident involving Miss Uzoma Okere and a Naval Officer and his ratings. I wonder if we are moving forward at all in Nigeria. At this age and time, it’s unheard of in civilized economies that a public servant, whose salary is dependent on whether or not the citizens pay their taxes or not still has the courage to beat up this same taxpayer. Are we paying them to beat us up? This is really disheartening.
Okere was said to have closed from the office and was driving home in the usual chaotic Lagos traffic, when she had an encounter with naval ratings that eventually resulted to her being brutalized. She was even stripped naked in public.
Okere was treated with such height of indignity for not moving her vehicle fast enough out of the way for Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade’s convoy.
The truth of the matter is that situations like this abound everyday in countries like Nigeria and other developing economies where value for human life is at its lowest. Many of these devilish acts go unnoticed, because the victims are sons and daughters of “nobody” in the society. This has to stop!
I encourage all Nigerians and others everywhere to stand against this injustice. Just because someone is in one uniform or the other doesn’t make him a better citizen in any way. In fact he/she should be grateful for having an opportunity to serve.
I move the motion that we all STAND FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!
